Stock Day Trading – Combining System Trading & Discretionary Trading Into a More Effective Approach

New and experienced stock day traders alike grapple with an all important question: Which method is the best approach to stock day trading, a system approach or a discretionary approach? While each approach has its advantages and disadvantages, the correct answer may, in fact, be a combination of the two approaches.

System trading means creating a strict set of objective and mechanical rules for identifying if a trade opportunity exists, when should you enter the trade, and how do you exit the trade. The operative words are “objective” and “mechanical”. If a set of trading rules can be programmatically reduced to a series of computer instructions, then the rules are objective and mechanical.

One of the main advantages of system trading is that it enables you to produce consistent trading results. In other words, your actual trading results should be identical to the results generated by the system. This type of trading requires very little thinking or analysis on your part, and all you have to do is follow the trading system rules without deviation.

However, system trading can be difficult to implement in practice because it typically requires you to take all of the valid signals produced by your system in order to allow the system’s edge to manifest itself. This is because it may take a considerable amount of trades in order to turn a profit with a mechanical method. As a result, your system will often produce entry signals that run contrary to what your common sense is telling you. For instance, the current trading day may be a very strong bullish trending day without any signs of selling; however, if your system produces a valid short signal, then you must take the signal without question in order to allow the edge to manifest under a system trading approach. Or, if you are in a trade and prices come very close to your profit target and suddenly reverses back toward your entry, you must stay in the trade if your system trading rules require you to do so, even if you believe strongly that the trade is failing. This type of trading is very hard on the emotions because it often requires you to make decisions that go against logic.

Discretionary trading, on the other hand, entails identifying when to enter and exit a trade based on whether you cognitively or intuitively perceive that a profitable trade opportunity exists. In essence. you are assimilating various mental processes of perception and judgment to determine whether you should either take a position or remain on the sidelines. Although discretionary traders also use rules for entering and exiting a trade, usually discretionary rules do not meet the objective and mechanical test. Typically, discretionary rules cannot be completely programmed for computerized instruction. An example of discretionary trading would be deciphering the sequence of trades occurring at the ask versus trades occurring at the bid on time and sales in order to determine whether a trade opportunity exists.

Discretionary trading is usually easier on the emotions than system trading because you tend to take trades that you agree with emotionally. For example, a discretionary trader that trades with the trend and looks for trade entries by reading the time and sales screen would probably avoid taking a short trade during a very bullish trend day in which there were no signs of selling on time and sales, because he would most likely be trading against the trend.

The main disadvantage of discretionary trading is the inconsistent results this style of trading can potentially produce. Markets are constantly changing, and the circumstances and factors which may have led to you placing a winning trade yesterday, may not be the same as they are today. A lot of the success of discretionary traders can be attributed to their ability to perceive trade opportunity. However, what may be perceived as the same setup that occurred in the past, may in fact be an entirely different setup upon a more thorough analysis. As humans, we are susceptible to biases that allow us to equally treat all market situations simply because they look similar to past situations. Looks can be deceiving when it comes to market analysis and one must perform careful due diligence to make sure that they are comparing apples to apples.

There is a third approach to stock day trading which combines both approaches described above. The hybrid trading approach merges together system trading and discretionary trading. Under a hybrid trading approach, you would employ objective system trading rules for those parts of the decision process that will enable you to achieve consistent results, but discretionary decisions would only be allowed for situations that don’t materially affect the outcome of the trade. For instance, identifying when a trade opportunity exists and when to enter the trade would be performed under objective system trading rules. However, discretionary decisions regarding how and when to exit the trade would only be allowed after your first profit objective has been satisfied because the essence of the trade opportunity has been met. A hybrid trading approach can often produce more effective results than either a system trading approach or a discretionary approach by relying on the rudimentary idea that sometimes the sum is greater than the parts.

A New Career – $$ – Day Trading Stock

What are your going to do now?

Lost your job? Your career is over? Your business failed?

Yet, you have some trading experience and the resources and passion to start a new career/business.

Then day trading may be for you.

Unlike other individual financial instruments traded, with stock day trading there are thousands of stocks that can provide dozens of day trading opportunities (big money wins) – any trading day, any time of the trading day. This article is about: day trading stock, trading stock, stock day trading, day trades, stock day trade and the like and you.

A fresh perspective about stock day trading.

While daytrading, It is the job of the day trader to find setups, stocks that present opportunities to make substantial money, throughout the trading day, online day trading, especially day trading stock.

The successful day trader should be looking for stock in a tension state, which is simply a stock with a daily price movement substantially away from a price balance, technically speaking, when you view charts. A tension state would be much like viewing a pendulum with the ball pulled away from neutral enough that, when released, it tends to accelerates to its neutral state and beyond.

Stocks, like the pendulum ball, tend to seek a balanced state, and like the ball, they return to balance and beyond, then fluctuate above and below the neutral position as they eventually return to some state of balance, or non-tension state, above, below, or close to the point of beginning.

Do stock prices behave this way while daytrading during the same trading day? Yes and no.

There are times when price of a stock will be completely filled after a gap open (price move from the prior day close) that morning of day trading or later in the trading day. Other times you will see a 50% retracement in the same day. Most times a gap move at market open will hold this tension state or price move the whole day and fill completely or partially on subsequent days.

As there is no way to predict how the price of a stock will behave after a sudden, major price move, it is best advised to be out of any of these day trades before the end of the day trading day.

Day trading stock, we find, is also far more interesting, as each stock represents the performance of an individual company or companies with tangible and recognizable products and services exchanged worldwide, in many instances involving companies managed by recognized leaders in their field. Each stock has both a technical (long and short-term price charts) and a fundamental (financial performance, balance sheet, profit and loss statements, earnings and so on) histories – both in flux, both impacting price positively and negatively. Therefore, trading stocks is far more interesting, and frequently more challenging than other forms of day trading to make money yet the profits are unlimited for those who learn to play the new game well.

Why day trading as opposed to swing trading or investing?

The last few months of 2008 have been crises times for most stock traders, where holding after the market close presents enormous risk. Stock prices can move 5, 10, even 20% or more over night leaving swing traders in shock at the open of the following day trading day. For all those buy and hold investors, their experience was no less shocking where, within just a few months, their mutual fund, IRA, or private investments can be 30, 40, and 50% depleted in overall value in a matter of months, wiping out decades of gains.

Day trading stocks, buying and selling stocks within the same trading day, with no exceptions, is in our view the best day trading opportunity in the NYSE and Nasdaq markets while day trading stock, trading stock, stock day trading, day trades, stock day trade.

Done well, gaining the confidence and competence with a consultant / coach, trading with a winning system that consistently gives you anticipated results, stock day trading can be the most rewarding (both for the joy of winning and wealth building profitability) trading approach we know of (and we have tried them all).

You too can earn thousands a day – day trading stock, should you qualify.

Thousands a Day – Day Trading Stock

Day trading stock, at this level of profitability, is obviously unique.

Unlike other individual financial instruments traded, there are thousands of stocks to choose from, any one of which can provide day trading opportunities (otherwise known as big money wins) – any trading day, at any time of the trading day.

This makes stock day trading exciting, and for those who know how, extremely rewarding. For those who master the new stock day trading game with a coach in a winner’s stock trading room, the opportunities for learning, not just stock trading, and wealth building are unlimited.

What is the big payoff that everyone seeks?

To become a successful day trader, with profitable business performance, where they can make thousands a day, any trading day.

What’s required to generate this kind of money in the stock trading business?

Of all the success factors, it comes down to three key elements:

  • First, you must stop trading on your own and start trading with a world-class stock trading coach (like a world-class tennis player learning and performing with a coach to get to and stay at the top of the game)
  • Second, you need to be playing (trading) a winner’s game (system) that your coach recommends, not an old-school game, but a stock trading game big money winners play
  • Third, you need to gain the confidence, competence, and performance results consistent with those of a stock trading winner, again, facilitated with your own personal coach at your side.

Here’s a look at one aspect of stock day trading, from a winner’s perspective.

While day trading, it’s the job of the winning day trader to find stock trading setups – stocks that present opportunities to make substantial money – what we refer to as stocks in a “tension” state.

A stock in a tension state is simply a stock with an intraday price movement substantially away from its price balance price or the price at yesterday’s close, technically speaking, when you view stock trading charts.

Viewing a stock in a tension state would be much like viewing a pendulum with the ball pulled far away from neutral enough that, when released, it’s movement tends to accelerate toward its neutral position and beyond.

Stocks, like the pendulum ball, tend to seek a balanced state as well and like the ball, they return to balance and beyond, and then fluctuate above and/or below a neutral price as they eventually return to a state of neutrality, balance, or non-tension state – above, below, or close to the point of beginning, price wise.

This is the price action winning stock traders live for and thrive on, day by trading day.

This new-school trading makes winners feel both fulfilled and alive. Let’s take a look.

The winner’s focus is to trade this action to win (not the money involved) one or more trades during the trading day – that can generate $500 to $2,000 and more per trade, depending on lot size (the number of stock shares traded). This form of trading to win, that is, absent the focus on the money while trading, is not to be confused with gambling which is what losers love to do at Las Vegas and while day trading stock or any other financial instruments.

Trading on your own, without a coach, using any of the hundreds of old-school, gambler’s stock trading systems, lacking stock day trading confidence, competence, and a history of success while day trading is precisely why we say that 98% of all traders are losers – not profitable and otherwise dissatisfied traders.

Thus, only 2% of traders worldwide fall into that category of day trader – winners, consistently profitable winners.

Winners own the game – the rules, the software (with algorithms reflective of losing trader knowledge and trade execution patterns), when they make markets and stock prices move the most.

We designed our game to ride the coat tails of the 2% (who are intent on “killing” the crowd, the 98%), for our fair share of the action.

So, there are three games being played in the stock market, options, commodity, Forex, or any other markets: the winner’s game, the loser’s game, and our game. (We only trade stocks.)

Day trading stock this way, we find, is a far more interesting and relatively stress free approach to the day trading losers are accustomed to experiencing.

Stock day trading involves the performance of an individual company or companies, many times with familiar products and services exchanged locally and globally, in many instances involving companies managed by recognized leaders in their field.

Both technical and fundamental data influence stock investors, swing traders, and day traders execution decisions.

Each stock has both a technical (long and short-term price action history – charts) and a fundamental (financial performance – balance sheet, profit and loss statements, and earnings histories). This opportunity to trade the price action on any of thousands of stocks, any trading day, and time of the trading day, makes trading stocks far more interesting, and frequently more challenging than other form of day trading.

So, what we do as stock day traders is far more interesting, exciting, and very financially rewarding.

Our system is also quite simple as we only focus on only 20% of what losers watch, trade a fraction of the time and thus experience a fraction of the trading stress, and as such, we have the energy to trade well when opportunities present themselves.

The game has changed, so have we, and so can you – should you qualify.
